About
Kupeke Loko Iʻa is a fishpond restoration and management project of the Kupeke Ahupuaʻa nonprofit organization.
Kupeke is an ancient loko kuapa style fishpond held in private ownership. restoration efforts were initiated in november 2018, by native practitioners of mana'e descent, with the permission of kupeke fishpond owners. Our current workload includes invasive vegetation removal, native plant restoration, algae & animal monitoring. the main objective is to restore and maintain a healthy & balanced fishpond ecosystem to provide a source of fish & limu for subsistence gathering. due to ongoing monitoring, kupeke loko i'a has restrictions on access. please DO NOT ENTER pond without permission from management (Contact) this will help reduce the spread of disease and alien species from traveling to and from the fishpond on clothes and equipment. please do not let loose pets wander into the pond. |
FISHPONDS:
"Only on Molokai does one find the unique occurrence of a continuous, almost uninterrupted progression of fishponds, which is of singular importance in the preservation of Hawaiian culture. These ponds follow one another for many miles along the southeastern shores of the Island."
Kupeke Pond:
"Kupeke This is an excellent pond, still in limited commercial use. It covers 33.8 acres and has one Makaha. A wall connects two sides of the bay."

Kupeke fishpond:
Summers "Site 206....This loko kuapa, having an area of 33.83 acres, was built by connecting the two sides of a bay. Its almost straight wall is approximately 2210 ft. long, with a makaha in the western portion. Kupeke pond was still being used commercially in 1960."
