HOʻOULU: a recognized period of generational growth
2023 marks the most noticeable improvement in observed conditions of the loko iʻa habitat since traditional management was put in place 5 years ago, and we are still improving towards our goals daily! One of the kamaʻaina indicators for a healthy fishery is the ability to "peku" or scoop out ʻanae with the feet along the shores of south molokai, as a custom practiced in the fishery of hilia, and recognized by ʻAiʻai upon his travels of different moku. ʻAiʻai is the son of Kuʻulakai & Hinapukuiʻa, who are recognized as the builders of the very first loko iʻa at Lehoʻula in East Maui.
